How we build your granny flat, from site check to handover

A BlueGum granny flat takes 4 to 6 weeks to approve on the fast CDC path, then 12 weeks to build. Before that comes a site assessment, your design and the reports the approval needs. This page goes through each step and what you will see on site.

What can move the timeline

Finished granny flat kitchen with white cabinetry
  • Wet weather early on. Excavation and the slab need dry ground. Once the roof is on, rain matters much less.
  • Late decisions. Tiles, cabinetry, colours and flooring each need choosing before their stage. Make them all before the build starts and the trades never wait.
  • Changes during the build. Every change has a time cost as well as a price, and it should be priced in writing before the work happens.
  • The site. Rock or other surprises found during excavation add work before the slab.
  • Inspections. Several stages must pass an inspection before the next can start.

Can I stay in the house while you build?

Yes, in almost all cases. There will be noise, trades and machinery, and part of your yard will be closed off, but the main house stays liveable.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a granny flat?

12 weeks from slab to handover. Add the approval, 4 to 6 weeks for a CDC or 3 to 6 months for a DA, and the paperwork before it.

Can I visit the site during the build?

Yes. Book a time with us and we will walk the site with you. A building site has safety rules, so please do not go onto it on your own while work is under way.

What happens at handover?

Once the final inspections pass and the occupation certificate is issued, we walk through the granny flat with you, show you how everything works, and hand over the keys and your documents.

What if I find a defect after handover?

Tell us in writing and we will arrange to inspect it and fix it. In NSW, residential building work also carries statutory warranties: 6 years for major defects and 2 years for other defects.
